Some days, though, I can't. I just can't choose joy. Today is one of those days. Because sometimes life is hard and plans change and I don't know what I'm doing or where I'm going anymore. But Jesus never said that life would be easy. He tells us that he will give us rest when we are weary.
So today I will choose emptiness. Because filling up with my own plans and ideas and goals and wants and desires doesn’t work. I will choose empty hands, because I have nothing left to give. I will choose an empty mind, because I have nothing left to think. I will choose an empty heart, because I have nothing silly or trivial left to hold on tight in there. But empty is not nothing. It is nothing but room. It is nothing but room to receive the gifts that God will place in my hands. It is nothing but room to be filled with the thoughts and plans that Christ will place in my mind. It is nothing but room for the healing that Jesus will work in my heart. Today I will choose emptiness.
Because being empty is sometimes the only way I have room to be filled with joy.
Tomorrow. Tomorrow I will choose Joy.
